RED HOOK HOUSING RENEWAL

In response to the events of Hurricane Sandy, the NYC Housing Authority commissioned the design team to make the Red Hook houses more resilient and to re-imagine the campus to be more livable and efficient as part of a comprehensive Community Development Block Grant-Disaster Resilience (CBDG-DR). The team developed strategies that address the challenges inherent in adapting aging buildings to be more sustainable, support a healthy social environment, and incorporate resilient strategies to withstand the next superstorm. The primary landscape strategy elevates the interior courtyards to create “lilypads” to articulate resident ownership and to provide flood protection zones.

Work completed at OLIN while Derek Hoetmer was employed as a landscape architect.
