REES STREET PARK

The design for Rees Street Park is inspired by the memories formed in everyday backyards and the unique alvar habitats found near Toronto in the Great Lakes environs. Alvars are characterized by rare plant and animal communities that thrive in shallow soils, frequent floods, and drought conditions. The vibrant life found in both the backyard and the alvar are reflected in the design. It’s a place where the diverse population of Toronto gathers in a space for active use, engagement, and respite from city life. The park program was curated with thoughtful care to remain active throughout the seasons in the dynamic climate of Toronto including: the Wall Crawl, the Alvar Mist fountain, the Hammock Grove, Backyard BBQ, and the Play Nest. The community pavilion is the central gathering place that facilitates a multitude of events and programs throughout the year. As with any backyard, Rees Street Park is a place for Torontonians to demonstrate a sense of ownership and pride to make the space their own.
