TIMES SQUARE

The reconstruction of Times Square transforms a notoriously congested and high-traffic area into a world class public space in the heart of New York City. The closure of Broadway between 42nd and 47th Streets creates 2.5 acres of plaza space where an average of 330,000 people move through every day. Simple gestures at the surface, including a series of monolithic granite benches, empower free-moving pedestrian flow and shape spaces for social interaction. Since the project opening, the reconstruction has significantly decreased pedestrian and vehicular accidents while increasing the economic output of surrounding commercial use.
