RIVERFRONT MHK VISION PLAN

The RiverFrontMHK coalition commissioned MCLV to reimagine Manhattan’s relationship to the Kansas River. After a devastating flood in 1951, Manhattan turned its back on the river, building flood protection measures that estranged the community from this beautiful natural asset.

The Vision Plan leveraged input from community stakeholders and past design studies to capture aspirations to meaningfully activate, access, and engage the riverfront. Opportunities for infill development, a new community center, wetland revitalization, kayak access, visual connections and identity, and a pedestrian bridge to link downtown with Fairmont Park were a few of the key ideas that the Vision Plan proposed. The plan is a tool for RiverFrontMHK to spark interest and momentum for tangible interventions, both large and small, that together will create a cohesive riverfront.
